thankful thirteen (january edition)

i've decided to make a list of thirteen things i'm thankful for each month in the year 2013! i want to use this list as a way to cultivate gratefulness in my life. i know there are always multiple things/people/events/moments/situations of which i am grateful for, but i want to take the time to actually write down specific things that have occurred rather than just the general. in other words, i'm always (or at least i always should be) thankful for Christ, my family, friends, etc, but i want to remember particular things for each particular month.

so without further ado, here is the thankful thirteen january list:

  1. of course, i have to start off by saying i'm thankful for another year God has given me. i hope that is not too general, but it's a true statement.
  2. a God who will never leave me or forsake me.
  3. the fact that Christ rescued me AND delights in me.
  4. confidence that God hears my prayers.
  5. latte art. (duh)
  6. target clearance.
  7. contacts. (i've worn them for 10+ years, but two different eye wear situations this month made me extra thankful that contacts are available)
  8. an unexpected saturday morning coffee date with my momma.
  9. an unexpected donut party.
  10. a "rainbow connection" moment. explanation- i'm doing the dishes with penelope sitting on the counter & playing in the bubbly water. i start singing quietly & to myself, "why are there so many.." penelope instantly chimes in & sings "...songs about rainbows." something about the way she sings "rainbows" is just the most adorable thing.... that & the fact it was totally unexpected. side note: i'm starting to think i must have a thing for the unexpected
  11.  a new millennium falcon shirt. it's probably so incredibly lame to even put that on the list, but if you saw the shirt & knew all about my excitement, you would probably agree that it needed to be on this list.
  12. almond syrup (again, probably lame, but so necessary)
  13. this verse.

...and there is my first little list. i hope when i look back it doesn't sound materialistic or selfish, but the Bible calls us to be thankful in ALL things & i think that can include even the little, silly things HE blesses us with. =)

all i want is to be in the light.

sometimes you read one verse, which reminds you of another verse, which leads to you to look at the notes in your esv study bible, which leads you to an entirely different verse.

it all started with this verse:

“The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us.” Psalm 118:27

which is references the benediction found in Numbers 6:24-26, "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace."

which made me think of God's unapproachable light found in I Timothy 6:15b-16:

“…he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.”

that lead me to Revelation:

21:23-25 “And the city of has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day-and there will be no night there.

22:4-5 “They (God’s servants) will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads, and night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”

so, basically the Lord God, who dwells in unapproachable light, has made us HIS light to shine upon the earth. one day, His redeemed people from every nation, tribe, and tongue will dwell forever in this beautiful light. can our finite minds even begin to grasp this?

why'd you have to go & turn to ice?

yesterday we were able to go to fete de glace in historic st. charles. downtown st. charles is a quaint spot with cobblestone streets & lovely boutiques. this is the third year we have been to this ice sculpting competition & it is always a fun time. my iphone pictures won't even begin to do justice of the details that go into these carvings. it always amazes me!

but first, coffee!

this castle took first place in the team competition.

the deep sea diver took 2nd in the team competition. it was my favorite!

we tried "grandma's cookies" & they tasted warm, fresh, & homemade. can't go wrong with that!

my purchase of the day. i've recently become obsessed with almond to the point i think i need to carry this in my purse to have with me at all times.

and now it's time for spontaneous combustion. *inside joke*

what a lovely winter day!

i am...i said.

God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord.  I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to
Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord. Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.  - Exodus 6:2-9

17 times God uses "I." it's as simple as that. HE is a covenant keeping God. HE is faithful. HE is in charge. HE will never forsake us and yet, Israel did not believe because of their situation. reminder - never let circumstances dictate my attitude or be a cause of doubt about God. HE will work all things for my good.

also, i just had to post the following pictures . i snapped one on my instax and it's probably my new favorite photo (for now!).

the ever passing moment.

it's friday! i had two different events that i was planning on attending tonight. unfortunately, i started feeling a little yucky at work today. by the time i got home, i just wasn't up for going anywhere. instead i will blog about what is going on at the present time.

eating – clif bars
i know this will not be a practical treat for my taste buds to get used to due to the price, but they were on sale at target so i bought a couple of boxes & i’m hooked.

listening – still not tired of the les miz soundtrack & my love of russell crowe's voice is growing.

pondering –the art of grace shown in the book of genesis. God chose, worked through, and loved some really messed up people in this portion of the bible. however, i'm not different than any of those folks and He still loves me. thank you lord for grace!

reading – a new (to me) blog called "target does it again" (i don't know if this really counts since the blog is mostly pictures...haha)
if you know me, you are well aware that the frequency of my visits to target far exceeds those of normal human beings. the gals at this blog take pictures of all the cute stuff & good deals that are to be found at the bullseye proving over & over that target never disappoints. sounds like my kind of blog!

enjoying –a 3 DAY weekend!

all i need is 116.

happy 116 day! i can't believe i haven't celebrated this day before.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." --Romans 1:16

life is short. death is certain.

today a sweet & beloved aunt passed away after battling breast cancer for over 3 years.  she was always one to give her time & energy to others. her selflessness was evident to everyone she met. my heart aches for her family. please continue to lift them up in prayer and that the God of all comfort will be with them.  God's grace is always sufficient.

i was already planning  to make a floral crown/headband & decided to practice tonight. when I went to the store, I picked out pink flowers in my aunt’s memory. i asked mysti to let me snap a few pictures on my iphone of her wearing the final product.

today has been a reminder that life is short & death is certain.  thankfully, the believer can recall the promises in Scripture such as I Peter 5:10, And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” i pray that i view each day with this eternal perspective.

the $10 thrift expedition.

some of the girls thought it would be fun to have a thrifting adventure after church! this adventure had specific guidelines to make it a bit more challenging.
GOAL:  each girl successfully find an entire outfit (head to toe)
RULE:  outfit must be within the $10-15 dollar range

    • 4 ladies with a whole new ensemble!
    • 3 ladies with successful purchases, but not complete outfits
    • 1 lonely lady who couldn't find anything =(
i decided to document the day with my fun, new video app & everyone was thrilled about it! okay, actually no one was too happy that i had my phone in their faces for a whole day, but it was still amusing.

(music by the talented don roberts --- thanks, don!!)

unfortunately, i was not able to film the best part of the day at steak-n-shake where i flicked one of kim's story dice off the table which sent us on a mad search for the missing die. this fiasco causes the table next to us to ask if they could help find what we're missing. kim proceeds to show them what the magical die looks like, but in the process spills the remaining eight all over the floor. let me just say two things: steak-n-shake floors are nasty & coffee creamers look like dice from far away.

good times....good times.

oh, yeah....we never found the die.

i like that we are kind of strange. (aka...a "fashion" show)

sometimes you just have to have a fashion show on a saturday night and by "fashion" i mean finding all craziest clothes combination and by "show" i mean taking pictures.

after this, we decided to make our own homemade version of "just dance" by having one person make up a dance while somebody else faced them and followed along.

we like that we are kind of strange.

i thrift. what's your superpower?

thrifting. it's my favorite hobby. seriously.

when people may ask what hobbies i enjoy, my response is usually something like, "well, um, i like to thrift........." let's just say it makes you sound rather daring & adventurous. =) i know my fellow thrifters will agree that thrifting is actually an exciting experience, not to mention enjoyable and fun. there is something enthralling about digging through other people's unwanted items and finding a hidden treasure and if you are like me, then you ALWAYS find treasure. it's pretty much my superpower. =)  the trick (and i'm still learning this) is to sift through what you REALLY will use/wear and what just looks like something cool or new to you, but in reality will get used (maybe) once.

thankfully most everyone in my family and my closest friends enjoy this hobby as well. we have great memories and bonding time especially during garage sale season.

speaking of closest friends......
i stopped by one of the local thrift stores to discover that they were having a major sale, mainly on men's clothing. what was an even BETTER discovery was that jessica just so happened to be there at the same time!  she hit the jackpot by getting 11 men's shirt for $3.95. woohoo! i think she has the thrifting superpower too.

i found two charming serving trays, but was unwilling to pay $9.99 for each! they were pretty darling & detailed, but, unfortunately not worth the hefty price.

i did, however, successfully add to my overabundance of polka dots by buying this dress & finding a cute pair of shoes for mayci!

you never know what you're going to find when you're on the hunt to thrift. it's an adventure waiting to happen! i have a feeling this blog will document many thrift/garage sale adventures & finds that are yet to come including the good, the bad, the ugly, and the plain ole' weird.
