happy thanksgiving! i hope everyone has a wonderful day that is filled with gratitude toward our saviour. speaking of gratitude, i've been thinking about it a lot this week! i've been reminded that Thanksgiving is not just an emotion. it is an active resting in the goodness of God.
here are some scriptures and quotes that i've stumbled across recently and that have caused me to meditate on what gratitude truly is. i decided to combine them all here & share:
"If giving thanks is just listing all the happy things and feelings I credit God for giving me, I’m sorely missing the point. I’m missing the foundation of thanksgiving, which is the very nature and character of God." - Lindsey Cournia, from an article on the deeply rooted magazine website that you can read here.
the article posted a great john piper quote as well:
"True gratitude must be rooted in something else...namely, a delight in the beauty and excellency of God's character."
and another piper quote from his solid joy devotional:
"Gratitude is joy toward God for his grace. But by its very nature, gratitude glorifies the giver. It acknowledges its own need and the beneficence of the giver."
"A life that gives glory to God for his grace and a life of deepest gladness are always the same life. And what makes them one is gratitude."
"Gratitude ought to be, and i believe it is, in the heart the most powerful force in human motive."
and some wonderful scriptures for meditation:
"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast loves endures forever." - Psalm 136:1
"I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds"
- Psalm 9:1
- Psalm 9:1
"Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." - I Thessalonians 5:16-18
